Having good vocabulary in English is an important skill – and it is something that you can always improve!
In our Spoken English classes, we give a lot of emphasis on vocabulary – today, we’re giving you our top 5 tips to improve English vocabulary.
-
Read – a lot
Select good books, magazines or online websites, and read as much as you can. The more you expose yourself to the language, the easier it is to learn.
-
Use a Dictionary
Always keep a dictionary close handy – when you come across an unfamiliar word, look it up. When you make the effort, you are more likely to remember what you’ve learned.
-
Maintain a Word-Journal
A word-journal is a small diary in which you can note down new words – especially words that could be useful to you in future, or words that you find difficult to remember!
-
Use a Thesaurus
A thesaurus is a book of synonyms – alternative words having the same meaning. You can use a thesaurus to find better words for the simple ones you usually use, like ‘good’ and ‘bad’.
-
Practice New Words
Besides all these ways of learning new words, it is important to actually use the words while speaking and writing. It is only when you start using new words in your daily life that your vocabulary really improves.
