If you’re interested in doing more advanced studies and research in the field of Law, a Master of Laws degree is the path for you. In this program, you’ll go beyond the basics of your undergraduate studies, while exploring a range of law disciplines and topics. This will equip you for a career in the UK, as well as with expertise that applies internationally  .

In UK LLM programs, the dissertation is an important component – you’ll have to perform original research in a field of your choice, related to the university’s areas of expertise.

Legal Practice Course, LPC

The LPC is a postgraduate diploma course that is specially designed to help you become a solicitor in any area of law, in England and Wales. This is a largely practice-based course, wherein you’ll become more familiar with the work done by a solicitor in the UK. 

In most cases, you will graduate with the qualification of PGDip. Some UK universities offer LPC with 2 exit points – PGCert which offers partial legal practice training, and PGDip which is the longer, more comprehensive program. In some cases, LPC can be combined with the LLM degree.The program is between 6 months to 1 year, depending on the university and type of qualification. You can expect to pay anywhere between 10-16,000 GBP for your studies.

Course Structure

Over the course of your studies, you’ll develop the practical skills and subject knowledge required to practice as a solicitor. You’ll gain experience in all the practicalities of the job, including interviewing clients and writing letters of advice, preparing legal documents and appearing in court. You will get exposure to realistic legal challenges and scenarios, helping you learn to think and behave like a legal professional.

Your studies will include core modules, such as Introduction to Professional Practice, Business Law and Practice, Dispute Resolution, Litigation, Drafting, Writing, Advocacy, Solicitors’ Accounts etc. You’ll also get a chance to pursue your own interests, such as Commercial Law, Competition Law, Employment Law, Family Law, Immigration etc.

Many universities also provide opportunities to help you gain valuable experience in the field – such as getting involved in voluntary pro-bono work, or availing of mentorship programs.

How to Become a Solicitor in UK?

A solicitor provides clients with advice about different aspects of the law, from property purchases, wills, divorces, civil or criminal cases, or corporate or commercial transactions. As a solicitor, you can have your own private practice, you can join a firm of solicitors, you can become the in-house legal advisor at a private or public enterprise, or you can work for the Crown Prosecution Service.

This is how you qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales:

• Undergraduate law degree followed by LPC from a recognised provider

• 2 years training contract within a solicitors’ legal practice

Once you successfully complete both, you’ll be qualified as a solicitor.

NOTE: As of September 2021, the new Solicitors’ Qualifying Exam (SQE) will be introduced. Over the next few years, the LPC pathway will be phased out. It will continue to be available to you for 3 years or less. Some universities like The Law University will phase it out after August 2021, and introduce new SQE courses.

Bar Courses

From September 2020, the UK introduced a new route to become a Barrister in the UK, replacing the earlier Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC). These new rules are meant to make training for the Bar more accessible, affordable and flexible.

Following your law degree, you have to complete a vocational course in the UK, followed by a pupillage or work component. This will qualify you to become a barrister in the UK. This process is highly demanding and competitive.

Different providers have different names for their courses, such as Bar Course, the Bar/Barrister Training Course (BTC), the Bar Practice Course (BPC), the Bar Vocational Course (BVC) and Bar Vocational Studies (BVS). Some universities offer the option of combining the Bar course with the LLM degree.

These courses are for 1 year, and costs average at 11-15,000 GBP.

Successful completion of the Bar course will qualify you for the next step in your path to becoming a Barrister i.e. pupillage.

Pupillage is typically for 1 year. During this time, you’ll undergo work-based, practical training under the supervision of an experienced barrister. Getting a pupillage is highly competitive. Your university may provide you with additional support and guidance towards getting a pupillage.

How to get into law without a law degree UK?

It is possible to practice law in the UK without doing an LLB, by completing a Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL).

This is a 1 year-long law conversion course, that brings non-Law graduates up to the required level of knowledge and skills for Law practice in the UK. It qualifies you for further programs in Law in the UK, including LLM, LPC and Bar courses. The program costs between 12-14,000 GBP.

Is GDL Worth It?

Many employers in the UK favour GDL graduates. Many of the skills from your non-Law undergraduate degree are transferable. Plus, the decision to study and pursue law at a later stage, shows a maturity and dedication that is considered valuable.
