Spotlight on: La Trobe University, Australia

La Trobe University is one of Australia’s top universities – globally ranked for its teaching and research, with multiple campuses across the southern part of the country, including the major cities of Melbourne – home to the largest campus – and Sydney.  It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and advanced research degree courses, across disciplines including Arts, Social Sciences and Communications, IT and Engineering, Business and Commerce, Law and Criminology, and Health.

La Trobe has a large population of international students, presently numbering at around 8000 from over 110 countries. In fact, La Trobe has especially close ties with India, being one of only two universities in Australia teaching Hindi, and boasting Australia’s largest collection of publications from India as well.

1. Entry requirements

The entry requirements vary by course and discipline. In Arts, Social Sciences and Communications, to gain entry into a graduate diploma programme, the minimum requirement is the successful completion of an Australian Bachelors degree or its equivalent, while for a Masters Programme, the requirement is a Bachelors degree in a Humanities subject with a minimum score of 60%. In IT and Engineering, the minimum requirement for a Masters Programme is a Bachelors degree, while relevant work experience may also be required in certain cases. Pathway courses are also available for international students to come up to the required level, based on recommendation.  

English language requirement: While certain faculties may demand higher language requirements, in general, the requirements are as follows – the completion of a preparatory course in English at the La Trobe College Australia Foundation Studies, or achieving minimum scores in an English test, including IELTS Academic, TOEFL, PTE Academic or Cambridge English. 

2. Costs and Funding

The average tuition fee varies as per course and discipline – for instance, a graduate diploma in Arts, Social Science and Communication averages at 31400 AUD, while a Masters in IT and Engineering averages at 35600 AUD.

Various scholarships are available for international students – the La Trobe College Excellence Scholarship is awarded to meritorious international students, with a reduction in annual tuition fee between 15-25% for the duration of studies. Applicants to eligible courses are automatically considered for the scholarship. Course-specific and campus-specific scholarships are also available.
