Spotlight on: Macquarie University

...

Macquarie University is one of Australia’s premier universities, ranked among the top 2% of the world’s best, producing much sought-after graduates. The university is located in Sydney, in the suburb of Macquarie Park – both close to the vibrant metropolitan centre, and far enough away to maintain the environment of a dedicated academic space.

MQ offers undergraduate, postgraduate and research-intensive degree programmes across a broad range of fields, but it is best known for its programmes in finance, accounting, actuarial studies, sciences, linguistics, business, and education.

With a population of 8000+ international students, and a reputation for excellence, MQ is an excellent choice for Indian students seeking higher education opportunities in Australia.

Key Facts

Eligibility: For Indian students, the minimum requirements for entry into an undergraduate programme is a High School Certificate equivalent to that of the Australian system – the Indian Higher Secondary Certificate, All India Senior School Certificate, and Indian School Certificate are those listed on the website. For entry into a postgraduate programme, a Bachelors degree from a recognised institution is the minimum requirement; for certain programmes, work experience may also be required for consideration. MQ also demands proof of English language proficiency, in terms of an IELTS certificate with an overall score of 6.5. If you don’t meet the minimum requirements, there are pathway programmes available to get you up to speed (speak to the counselling team at Hurray for more information).

Costs: The approximate annual tuition fee varies across disciplines and levels of study – it ranges from 33,000-36,000 AUD for a humanities programme, 36,500 to 39,000 AUD for sciences, 37,500 AUD for management and 38,800 AUD for engineering. In addition to the tuition fee, there are additional fees per credit course enrolled, as well as the Overseas Student Health Cover and a Commencement fee of 16,000 AUD, both of which are to be paid before classes start.

Scholarships: While the fees for higher education in Australia are on the higher side, MQ nonetheless boasts of a range of generous scholarship awards, granted on merit-basis, several of which are reserved for international students, and some specifically for students from India – for instance, the Macquarie University India Scholarship, India Partner Arts Scholarship, ASEAN Partner Scholarship, the Vice-Chancellor’s International Student Scholarship etc. The scholarship awards range from 50% coverage of tuition fee, to grants of 5,000-10,000 AUD annually.

The online applications for admission in 2020 are open, and applicants are suggested to apply at least 2-3 months before a session begins. There are 2 sessions for which one can apply – the first in February and the second in November.
