More widely known by its abbreviated moniker, RMIT is a globally reputed tertiary education provider (i.e. higher education in Indian terms), located in the metropolitan city of Melbourne, Australia.

Numbering among the Top 10 Universities in Australia, the Top 50 globally, as well as the Top 100 globally for Computer Science and Information Technology, RMIT is renowned for its professional and vocational education, applied research, and engagement with industry.

RMIT offers diploma programmes, undergraduate, postgraduate and research based degree programmes, as well as foundation studies i.e. courses which create a pathway to degree programmes at RMIT, especially tailored to the needs of international students.

RMIT has been a prime education hub for Indian students from as early as the 1990s, and continues to attract them in large numbers, with Indians constituting 11% of the international student population, mainly studying in postgraduate programmes in business, management, computer science and engineering.

Entry requirements

For entry into undergraduate programmes, the applicant must have higher secondary school certificate scores, equivalent to the minimum required Australian high school certificate scores, varying depending on the selected course of study. English language proficiency: Indian students must provide proof of the same via a recognised proficiency test, including IELTS (Academic), TOEFL, Pearson Academic and Cambridge English. The minimum required scores for admission vary based on the level of study.

Fees and Scholarships

Tuition fees vary across programmes, averaging around 33000 AUD for Bachelors Degree programmes in Business and Information Technology as well as for Masters Degree programmes in Information Technology, and around 41000 AUD for Masters Degree programmes in Business.

In addition to tuition fees, a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) of around 300 AUD is compulsorily charged, covering a number of student services aimed at improving student experience. Certain courses may involve materials which need to be paid for, while the RMIT Administration also levies charges for the optional use of certain additional services, like parking.

There are 36 scholarships available for international students. For students from India, admission into most Bachelors and Masters Degree programmes (barring certain exceptions) implies the automatic award of the Future Leaders Scholarship, with a 20% reduction in tuition fees for the entire duration of the programme, subject to the awardee maintaining sufficient academic progress in the programme.   

Applications to RMIT take place twice a year – from August 5 to November 10 (or December 1, for certain programmes) for the Semester 1 intake which commences in January; and from May 1-31 for the Semester 2 intake which commences in July.
