Newcastle University is among Australia’s top research universities, and is ranked 207 worldwide according to QS ratings. Located in the suburban area of Callaghan, yet close enough to the metropolitan area of Newcastle, to experience the benefits of both locales, Newcastle offers a wide range of programmes across several subject areas for the award of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, as well as shorter-duration certificate courses. Its top ranked subjects include Architecture, Education, Sociology and Psychology, among several others, with its Mineral and Mining Engineering, and Nursing subjects ranked in the Top 50 (QS 2019). A large university with a big student body numbering over 12000, the university’s global outlook is indicated by its 2000 plus international students.

1. Entry requirements

The minimum requirement for entry into any of the postgraduate programmes is a Bachelors Degree, in the same or related subject – a degree in a non-related subject of undergraduate study is also accepted for certain programmes. Several Masters Programmes may have additional requirements such as work experience.

The English language requirement is satisfied by achievement of the minimum required score in the preferred test i.e. IELTS – 6.5 for most postgraduate programmes, with certain programmes having higher requirements going up to 7.5. Other tests such as TOEFL, Pearsons PTE, and Cambridge English will also be considered.

2. Costs and Funding

Annual tuition fee for a postgraduate programme varies as per the subject area – indicative fees for 2020 average at 32-36000 AUD for a Masters degree programme, and approximately 16000 AUD for a Graduate certificate course. Enrolling international students will pay a deposit fee, part of which will cover the Overseas Student Health Cover

Scholarships: Newcastle University awards a wide range of scholarships, ranging from 500 to 15000 AUD. A number of these are specifically for international students, including – the FEBE International Postgraduate Coursework Scholarships in International Architecture and Built Environment, and in Engineering and Technology, with 50 available awards of 12000 AUD for each category, awarded on merit-basis; and the South Asia Business Scholarships for students from India and other South Asian Countries, with 100 awards of 10000 AUD.

3. Application timeline

The application deadline for study commencing in Semester 1 i.e. February 2020, is 9 February 2020. International applicants are advised to submit their applications as early as possible.
