Spotlight on: University of Queensland

The University of Queensland is one of the top universities, not just in Australia, but in the world. Ranked highly at 48th in the world according to QS ratings for 21019, it is also a founding member of the prestigious Australian Go8 – the Group of Eight best research universities in the country; thus, an education at UQ is not just world-class, but among the best you could get in Australia.

UQ caters to a large student population of 54000, studying at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, across its three campuses located in Queensland. The main campus is in Brisbane, the capital city, and a truly cosmopolitan city to live and learn in. The international student population is a large one, numbering at 15400, making UQ a diverse and vibrant community.

1. Entry requirements

The postgraduate programmes offered at UQ include graduate certificate, graduate diploma and Masters by coursework – the minimum entry requirements generally involve a Bachelors degree, in the same or a related field for some programmes, with a minimum required score as per the demands of the programme, along with other programme-specific requirements.

English language requirements: a minimum of 6.5 in the IELTS examination, with no individual band less than 6, or the equivalent score in TOEFL, Pearson, CES or BEP.

2. Costs and Funding

The annual tuition fee ranges from 32-33000 AUD for Humanities Masters programmes, to 40-45000 AUD for programmes in subjects such as Communication and Data Science. An additional Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) of approximately 300 AUD is also charged.

Scholarships: UQ has a number of scholarships available on a merit-basis, some of which are exclusively for commencing Indian students enrolled in a Postgraduate coursework programme, such as – the HASS Scholarships for Excellence, for Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, valued at 10000 AUD for the duration of study; and the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences Indian Scholarship for Science and Mathematics, with an award of upto 50% of tuition fees and 100% of SSAF for the duration of study.

3. Application timeline

Applications for Semester 1, commencing in February 2020, will close on 30 November 2019, while those for Semester 2, commencing in July, will close on 31 May 2020. Certain programmes may have different closing dates.
