How to read a table

  • identify what the table is about. This will be indicated in the question itself.
  • identify the 2 main types of data given. These will be indicated in the top row and first column in the table.
  • identify the unit in which the data has been indicated – e.g. in thousands, percentage, kilometres etc.
  • scan through the data that has been given to you. Take each box in the table and identify which data row and column it belongs to.

Example: In the years 1990-1999, 29000 girls were enrolled in middle school.

  • identify the patterns that the table is indicating to you. There will always be certain commonalities and differences. Based on this you will be able to make comparisons.

Example: You can make comparisons between boys and girls, between the different levels of schooling i.e. primary, middle and secondary, and between the different decades i.e. 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s.

Quick tips:

  • always start reading the table by identifying the types of data. This will help you avoid confusion with regard to the various numbers you see.
  • ensure that you use the exact terms given in the table when you start writing.
